Welcome Hotchkiss Class of 1949!
What were you doing back in 1949?
Some of the Guests arriving here on this beautiful Fall weekend in Lakeville were graduating from this prestigious college preparatory boarding school that year, and now, 55 years later, they are back and reminiscing with old classmates and looking ahead to the future of the Hotchkiss School.
Interlaken has been welcoming Hotchkiss families since 1891, the year when both Hotchkiss and Interlaken (the Sunnyside building) were founded. (anyone care to share what they were doing back in 1891?) We are located right next door to each other so on some evenings in the Fall you can hear the Football games in the distance.
In the warmer months, we share the same lakefront. Here is the Hotchkiss Sailing Team practicing on the deepest lake in Connecticut.
All year round, we deliver Morgan's burgers-to-go to the students and faculty.
We are closely connected with Hotchkiss. We enjoy meeting meeting the prospective students and parents on revisit days, and anticipate a four year relationship with them upon their acceptance. We welcome families for Hotchkiss Parent's Weekend (coming up soon!) and Hotchkiss Graduation. We welcome back many alumni groups each year, as well as school sport teams looking to compete with Hotchkiss.
Hotchkiss is quite a notable boarding school, and has graduated many notable figures! Click here to see the list of Hotchkiss notable alumni.
"Not your Average Weekend"
This blog is to introduce you three things: Susie & Mo, the “Not your Average Mom.com” blog and the “Not your Average Weekend” at Interlaken.
On September 2nd I met two very interesting and very fun women, Susie & Mo.
They were looking for a property in Connecticut to host a women’s retreat in February 2015. They found Interlaken on the web (where else is there?) and decided to come for a visit. They really liked what they saw at Interlaken – the Guestrooms, the meeting spaces for activities and the overall feel of the property and have decided to hold their event here the weekend of February 27th and 28th, 2015. Ya-hoo!
Now, this is where the “Not your Average Mom.com” blog comes in. The blog has over 20,000 readers all over the world and if you click into it and start to read you will see why. Don’t let the “Mom” part fool you and think that if you aren’t a Mom it won’t apply. If you are a woman you will understand and if you are a man you will also understand. Susie’s purpose of the blog is to “maintain my sanity by looking for the humor in, well, everything” and writes about “the stuff that some people don’t want to talk about.” She certainly talks about it all right! Be sure to check it out. Her blog is #1 at "TopMommyBlogs.com" for a reason!
Once you begin reading her blog and fall in love with it, you may just decide that the weekend she is planning for in February 2015 at the Interlaken is one you’d like to be a part of. In addition to meeting her, you will meet up to 100 other women that are looking for a little getaway from their daily life that will include entertainment, yoga, self defense, great food and drink, relaxation, and much more FUN. The details and posts about the Interlaken will be upcoming on Susie’s blog so be sure to check there daily, but here are some links to posts already written:
Call us anytime to make your reservations! Simply tell us you’d like to come for the “Not your Average Weekend” in February and we’ll take it from there.
We are all looking forward to hosting this probably crazy event next year!
"Perfect Wedding Weekend"
Although I could have picked any of the dozen positive reviews posted on the knot, I chose this one:
"We hosted our July wedding weekend at Interlaken Inn. The entire experience, from beginning planning to Sunday brunch end, was excellent. The wedding coordinator, Stephanie Holst-Grubbe, is fantastic. She is easy to work with, has great attention to detail, is a problem solver and doesn't seem to be shocked or rattled by anything. On the day of, I literally did not worry about a thing. She took care of things I hadn't even thought to mention (including a last minute guest). Steph alone is reason enough to get married here, but I will go on-
The Inn has 80+ rooms, which was perfect to house our 175 guests. There were several types to choose from, our favs being the detached Woodside suites (pet friendly), townhouses (affordable option for large families & groups of friends) and traditional main building rooms.
The reception tent is beautiful, with permanent flooring, roll up sides (so workable in hot or cold weather), and attached to a permanent building with bathrooms and game rooms.
The welcome bbq, cocktail, reception & brunch food was all delicious. Brandon is very skilled and also very flexible. We requested a midnight taco bar at our after party and boy did he deliver! The number of options is almost overwhelming.
Interlaken makes planning a unique wedding weekend very easy. We had a welcome bbq, followed by a lakeside bonfire on Friday night. There were tons of available pre-ceremony activities on Sat. (kayaking, swimming, volleyball, hiking, etc.) We held a post-reception after party at the hotel bar/restaurant, Morgan's. We finished everything off with a Sunday morning buffet brunch. Pricing is broken down into various packages for each event, and is easy to follow. The bill can be split up however the bride and groom like.
The staff was incredibly kind and very tolerant of our sometimes boisterous guests. We took the place over with lawn games and group sing-alongs, and no one batted an eye. Our guests RAVED about this place. Our families LOVED this place. I highly recommend!"
After reading this and the other 11 reviews, you'll want to have your wedding here too!
Embrace the Fall Season
If you haven’t seen a tree with a touch of color yet, you can certainly feel it in the air already. The cool nights, the crisp mornings, the sun shifting in the sky – Fall Foliage season is quickly approaching and the Northwest Corner of Connecticut is well known for its beauty this time of year. I could give you many driving recommendations of wonderful views (which you will probably see en route to us) but why not change it up a bit and actually feel it? Take a walk through the woods, take a hike up a mountain, kick up the leaves – take all of the beautiful surroundings in before this fleeting season is gone!
Now, when to visit? Although the CT DEEP says that Northwestern Connecticut is in peak between October 9th and October 15th, the color does start much earlier, typically the last week in September (I’ve already seen a smattering of trees with touches of color). The last week of September includes the first weekend in October, and we happen to be offering a special “Fall Foliage Package” that includes your overnight accommodations and some offerings in our restaurant for a taste of the season – be sure to check the package out by clicking here.
Now, where to go in this area? We’ve got a few recommendations:
- Macedonia Brook State Park, Kent, CT (YANKEE Magazine voted Kent the #1 Fall Foliage town in Connecticut in 2010 – need one say more?)
- Bash Bish Falls, Mount Washington, MA (highest waterfall in Massachusetts)
- Bear Mountain, Salisbury, CT (highest summit in Connecticut – amazing views!)
- Beaver Pond Trail, Lakeville, CT (walking distance from the property, lake side walk, waterfall)
- The Appalachian Trail, many access points in CT and MA (needs no explanation)
- Harlem Valley Rail Trail, Millerton, NY (perfect for bike riding)
To all of our Repeat Leaf Peeping Guests, please add to my list! Feel free to tell me about your favorite Fall spot in this area as I’d be happy to share with others who are looking to truly embrace this amazing and vibrant season!
Mixing things up at Interlaken!
So you've had a long day and you just ordered a cocktail, your favorite one. It comes out to you, complete with a salted rim, a wedge of lime and a cute sipping straw. The perfect blend of Tequila, triple sec and lime juice. It tastes perfect. How do they get it to taste so perfect? I've never seen a bartender make a cocktail using a measuring cup, which is what I would need in order to make the perfectly balanced Margarita. They give a splash of this and a splash of that and Voila! Maybe taking the Mixology program at Interlaken will help in appreciating our favorite drink!
Mixology is one of our newest team building activities offered here at Interlaken, and it's a fun hour filled with Brandy, Rum, Vodka and some not-so-expected ingredients. Name your bar, create your cocktail using standard and exotic ingredients, name your cocktail, taste your cocktail - then let the Judge decide!
